Alba remains calm after Maccabi defeat

The disappointment at Alba Berlin after the Euroleague defeat at Maccabi Tel Aviv was limited on Thursday evening. Because their strength at home and the state of Berlin, which was characterized by the stress of the game, were two too heavy burdens. “We’ve just had two really stressful two weeks. With very strong opponents who demanded a lot from us,” said sports director Himar Ojeda after the 74:87 bankruptcy in the Israeli top team.

The Bundesliga team slept through the game in the first quarter. It lacked freshness and focus. And maybe the respect was too great. Maccabi had won eight of nine home games. “A lot of people have problems here. There’s also an incredibly heated atmosphere here,” Ojeda said.

The Berliners therefore tried to use the depth of the squad. “We had some problems in the team, so we decided to rotate more to maybe find extra energy,” said coach Israel González.

At least that’s what happened during the game. Alba showed fighter heart and came back to six points in the final section. “We tried, and in the end we came close again. We were very stable there and we tried to come back,” said Ojeda, praising the team’s morale.

One who was always wanted in Tel Aviv was guard Jaleen Smith. The 28-year-old has been in brilliant form for weeks and is a reliable marksman. “I have a lot of confidence right now. My teammates are looking for me. And I hit my shots,” he said.

After some initial difficulties, Smith takes responsibility in difficult situations. “He has evolved. He still had some problems in the first year, but he is now totally integrated. Of course, his teammates also know that he is playing well. He finds his way,” the Alba sports director praised him.

On Monday, Smith and his teammates will be challenged again in the Bundesliga. Then the leader of the table will play the eighth Würzburg Baskets (6 p.m. / Magentasport).
